building the open web one bit at a time

3rd week of March 2010 blogging

Big Shoutout of thanks to Esme Vos on her re-printing my series of three articles in her MuniWireless blog on our Digital City project!

Part 1 -and Fiber Optic technology and the spread of access.  What do we do with all this fiber?  Create JOBS!

Part 2 - was on why I moved to North Eastern Ohio - and the 3:1 sustainable model we’ve developed to help pay for new kinds of jobs.

Part 3 - is on the ‘virtuous circle’ of Volunteerism and Training that will sit on top of PeopleAggregator and offer a Citizen Dashboard.

StatusNet is kicking some serious butt.  Now with a full offering of ‘microblogging’ services across public, private, cloud and enterprise.  All based on emerging open standards! Congrats to Evan Prodromou and his growing team!

Interview with Vince Clarke - lots of sexy analog synths!

Its nice to see Rafat Ali see through the Ning hype.  No one has ever asked if they’re profitable! And just because you can raise $119M and provide 2.3M networks - doesn’t mean that’s a good thing. It’s what you do WITH that position. Many people call their Ning networks - simply “Nings”.  I love that.  But I’ve also asked (publicly) that Ning release analytical data so we can study the phenomena of vertical niche social networks. They’ve got the data we call WANT!  And they need to truly open up. Many networks wish to LEAVE Ning - and they can’t!

I’ve always felt that Metcalfe’s Law was taken at face value. Quality over Quantity - I always say!

Rob Glaser (of all people) has defined what he calls the SuperPhone.  Clearly he’s laying the groundwork of a new company. Or will Real try and morph itself?

Yet another incubator - this time in Chicago = Excelerate

Sears uses TweetMyJob for job postings - 7k to start off with!

Jonathan Schwartz recalls a couple of interesting stories on patents from Jobs an Gates.

Real-time meter reading from Utilities?

I can’t wait to see what these cities will do with fiber…. that’s the big question!

Intellectually-inclined Facebook apps

Even just hearing the term ‘multimedia encyclopedia‘ brings a tear to my eye.  I’ll be tracking this BIG TIME ove rthe next few years - and actually doing something about it!@^%^$&^%#%$@#^$%

There’s a new guy at EMC who has some crazy ideas - about storage as a cloud

Notes on the future application ecosystem being a mixture of platforms, software and infrastructure as a service.

“How much value can we get out of public sharing?

Interesting background to teh reason why Formspring is moving from Indianapolis to Silly Valley. The CEO claims it was the employees, not the investors.  Well guess what?  Ever lived in Indianapolis? End of conjecture!  But CLEVELAND rocks!
