building the open web one bit at a time

Meanwhile… blogging #1

The Mayor of Yoiungstown was on CSpan to announce 500 new jobs coming to Youngstown.  Youngstown was named one of the top #10 cities to start a new business.  Oh gee, that’s where I’M starting Digital City Mechanics.  Big Shout out to Jim Cossler and the Youngstown Business Incubator, Hunter Morrison and the homies at YSU and Janko.

It seems amazing to me that in 2009 someone can write a post about building VALUE in a company versus traction - and have to explain to people why having 50M registered users don’t mean squat and why iLike went for so cheap.  But yet - it did happen and people still are scratching their heads.

This post also brings up Slide and Last.fm which are just TWO of hundreds of stupid ass VC investments that have occurred in just the past few yearsAnd yet people track VC investments, as if they’re the word of G_d!

To think that Facebook would just cut off iLike just seems incredibly unlikely to me. For one good reason “what does that make them look like - to all the OTHER developers?  Apple may not care about that, but ALL Facebook has is trust!”

I’m sure most people don’t know this, but Kara Swisher and Robert Scoble remember me BLURTING OUT at the iLike party in 2007 - warning them on their dependence on Facebook.  Well guess what?  Who’s laughing now?

Meanwhile if you need it in plain talk, here’s why AT&T and Apple got rid of Google voice on the iPhone. [NOTE TO SELF - let's call some lawyers and get them going on a class action lawsuit against AT&T for this Thumplay and FlyCell overcharging!]

I’ve been pitching social media based scavenger hunts for a while - it’s great to see some happen!  Congrats to Live Nation on that!

Did you ever think we’d see a ‘broadband.gov’ web site?

6,000 year old timber structure (500 years older than StoneHenge) was found in Britain.

It seems JP saw my post on David Levitt’s wife Gail - being in the Woodstock movie.

Other supposed hyper-local resources

Oooops - the bimbos at Rosetta Stone fucked up and now lots of people will be hurt! They better find somebody to fall on the sword - quickly!

Somebody please tell Valleywag that Sony is toast, and though it’s a lot classier than Dunkin Donuts, still says where Julia Allison is coming from.

  1. You’re right, Marc, it was your post that sparked what I wrote.
