building the open web one bit at a time

Facebook officially tries to take over the Web

I attended a Facebook-iLike party last year where I ended up YELLING at the iLike guy that I hoped he was developing for platforms OTHER than Facebook.  He assured me he was.

He had been going on and on about how Facebook WAS the social web and how open it was and how coolio Facebook was.

Now over a year later we continue to see evidence that Zuckerberg and Facebook really think the web IS Facebook and that they would do everything they can to suck IN content and people INTO the black hole known as Facebook, and dam the rest of the web.

This is downright scary shit!

Cause In Mark Zuckerberg’s latest Facebook is gonna take over the world” missive, Mr. Zuckerberg fails to bring up a very compelling usage of Facebook Connect - inviting your Facebook friends into another service. That’s what we’re doing with the U.S. Army ROTC program - and I bet allot of folks will use this feature.

NOTE: This invitation does NOT go out via SMTP email, but will get sent via the internal Facebook messages InBox. That message can contain links to any external service. Its a fair compromise we’re willing to live with - for the time being.

But not mentioning this compelling usage of FB Connect draws attention to their real intentions - to keep members locked INTO Facebook.

It’s all about about ‘Facebook across the Web’.  Not about the Open Web.

It’s hard to be 98% open, or half pregnant.  You’re either with us or against us.  Somebody said that.

Actually no - it’s OK Facebook can continue to do things the Facebook way and users will eventually figure it out. Then what’s gonna happen to Facebook’s strangle hold?

Ever heard of Friendster?  Word Perfect?  Netscape? AOL?

  1. Great comments and admonitions.

The self-perception of a staging area is irrelevant though. The Facebook community has the self-perception of being a solid entity but they are a gas. They facilitate temporary space for a paradigm shift. If they get too grabby they will not be retained in the “new web.” We are leaving the static days where Mosaic is even a memory, and even going beyond video. But I still put us at the mid point of the change to being a true technology producing human race. We were hoeing fields and shooting animals full time a hundred years ago. For facebook to presume it can swallow the evolutionary exertion of billions of years from single cell organism to point and click is a fatal miscalculation.
