building the open web one bit at a time

Oct. 17th blogging ‘08

First off - congrats to Dare Obasanjo and family on their newborn birth. Secondly I agree with Dare - that Yahoo’s implementation of an ‘opt-in’ checkbox to enables folks to control whether their data via their friends can be accessed - is another major building block for our social industry.  Congrats Yahoo-sters on that one!  Now I just gotta figure out what to do with this dumb Profile page?

Tee Hee Hee - I love it when Fred Wilson picks up on my ideas - six months later.  Too bad he doesn’t believe in white labeling. I guess I’ll have to return to that in six months.  But he does like Content APIsAnd underlying ID layers. I wonder how many of Fred’s companies offer that?.  We do - BTW - but Fred wouldn’t invest in us - cause we’re white labeled.  Oh - and run by me.

But the point I’m trying to make is that since no VCs would have anything to do with me or my company, we’re bootstrapped.  Guess what that means?  We have cash to stay alive. We do layoffs when we don’t have work to pay for everyone, but our platform keeps getting more powerful.  And over time - more and more of our networks are going live.

That’s what being bootstrapped gives you -a coat to wear during the nuclear winter.

Here’s a podcast I did talking about the Open Mesh.

Shared Culture

Woe! Microsoft endorsing Drupal! What has the world come to!

And so the widget wars take on a new perspectiveWith the continued investment and expansion of iGoogle - NetVibes has to white label itself - and play widget moderatorAnd Gigya and Clearspring are playing traffic gamesBut will users tolerate ads in widgets? That is the question!

If I were into the stock market - I’d buy NVidia

What we need are more ex-hedge fund CEOs promoting legalized marijuana

The question is: “will Pud startup FuckerCompany again?”

Congrats to Mike Masnick and Techdirt for noving up to the 64th floor. Bootstrapping is the new Black.

Just discovered Jon Udell’s blog ‘Perspectives’

Congrats to Brain Dear on his nuclear winter ‘pushkee’.

Yes indeed - the traffic is pretty bad in Delhi. We had one of our Indian programmers over in the spring and the #1 he was most freaked out about was the highway stsrem.  He asked me: “do all the cars drive this fast - all the time?”

We’re now going to see hundreds of closures of ill-thought-out social networks. Or ill executed.

Even though I am a supporter of OpenID - I don’t use it myself.  Here’s one reason why.
