Happy Bloomsday ‘08

Once again its the day we all use to celebrate James Joyce - his life, his works and in particular his novel Ulysses - which is 24 hours in the day of this Leopold Bloom in Dublin on June 16th, 1904.

Its called Bloomsday. Its a great excuse for Irish people the get drunk.

As some of you may recall - James Joyce is one of my heroes and certainly one of the greatest writers in the English language.

My favorite book he wrote is “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” - which I set to music - twice - back when I was an electronic music composer at Oberlin.

Joyce spent 20 years in Trieste, Italy (I myself have been going back to Trieste for 10 years now.)

Here’s a shot of a statue of Joyce on the streets of Trieste. He’s an adopted son.  Joyce was a party animal (as all great writers are.)  He went out and sang and drank - every night.

My favorite writer. I’ve been to Dublin and retraced some of Joyce’s as well as Stephen’s and Leo’s steps, but haven’t made it for Bloomsday.

How does one hear the music for Portrait?
