DataSharingSummit II and a DataSharing workshop
We’re going to do two DataSharing events this spring - given the upsurge of interest in these topics and the success of our first event last Sept.
The first one - is a DataSharingWorkshop - held April 18-19 - right between the Web 2.0 Expo and the RSA event. That event will be held over two days at SFSU in downtown SF.
The second event - is a DataSharingSummit - a one day event - being held down in the Valley at the Computer History Museum - May 15th. That happens right after the next Internet Identity Workshop.
Both these events are dedicated to solving problems in an open format - not exclusive conversations held behind doors. Both events will reach out to any and all other efforts, such as DataPortability.org, the Identity Commons, OpenSocial, OpenThis and OpenThat.
Just leave your closed minded thinking - at home. We’ve created a Wiki for signup and contributions to topics to be discussed.
Congrats to Kaliya Hamlin and Laurie Rae who have been working hard and will continue to be working hard - to pull of these two events.

Aw, man! This is the kind of thing we miss by not being located in Silicon Valley. On the other hand, you guys miss out on our rain, stodgy cuisine and cynical disposition. We’re proud of those things. It’s a fair swap.
In all seriousness, the last Data Sharing Summit was a very well-executed, well-timed event, and if you’re in tech and can possibly make it (alas, I can’t this time), it’s important that you go.
My worries last time, unfortunately unresolved, were that a lot of people are going to want data for their commercial purposes, but not engage in the tit-for-tat syndicating of data that the ecosystem demands. For example, we can see this with OpenID at the moment: a lot of people are turning their site IDs into OpenIDs, but far fewer are letting you log in with OpenIDs from other sites. Secondarily, there are problems with perfectionist academic solutions when we need to build something - maybe not perfect, maybe not fully-featured, but something that works - right now.
I’ll keep a close watch; it’ll be interesting to see what turns up this time.
