building the open web one bit at a time

Blogging away to start the year off right….

Fred Wilson thinks that as long as Twitter is “good to it’s developers” it doesn’t necessarily have to disclose the business model - that it in fact - does not have.  Can’t complain too much about disclosing a non-model - but if every web business had to scale to 10M+ users to succeed - well needless to say we’d all be up shit’s creek - except for the top .001%.  So call it freemium, inserted ads, pay for scale, subscription models, white labeling or embedding in chips and mobile devices - I still think Twitter should commit to something.

Mark Cuban maps out basically what we did at Broadband Mechanics.  Its called sweat equity.

Have you submitted your question for Bill Gates’ CES keynote yet?  I have.

I like this guy Zed Shaw - I wonder if he’s got a job yet?  We’d hire him in a second.  But we still wouldn’t use Rails.  :-)
Can’t wait to have some time to watch Open Media Web.

I was hoping that hockey stick mentality went away.  Just cause Plaxo has had  a bunch of people sign-up means nothing to do with their business model or success as a company. Oh well - good luck to Joseph et al - anyway on selling the company.  After taking $28M in VC - what do you expect?

I’m liking Eric Schonfeld more and more everyday.  Here’s a great quote from his post on “who is the openest of them all”

So the next time a company touts how open it is, ask yourself how that will help it make more money. Don’t confuse openness with altruism.

Funny that pk talks about prices at the Venetian during CES.  That’s where I’m staying.  Killer breakfasts at BouchonMaybe Robert and Val will join me.

Year of the Widget - was that last year of this year?  I’m confused.

 292 Flickr mashups

We had our own experiences with EMI Digital - via an introduction of ex-EMI keyman Ted Cohen. needless to say they redefined the term ‘frightened Deer in headlights’.  They still don’t got nothing going - almost 2.5 years later.

I bet these Pastafarians don’t smoke too much dope

Here’s a conversation from Davos that you may want to participate in. Conversation aggregation is another key feature to be built.

  1. Re Zed Shaw, he also hates PHP and social networks, so I don’t think BBM is quite up his alley ;-)
