Rumors of MySpace opening up

I’ve had 3 calls today from people asking me to verify whether or not MySpace is really opening up.

All I can say is “My Buddy Dan Gould hasn’t called me - yet”

Now I hate to say I told you so - but I have this memory of talking to Ross Levinsohn at a Rafat Ali pool party in LaLa about this very notion - two years ago. Dan G had just gone to work for FIM and the very idea that MySpace would open up was so far fetched that - well lets just say that Ross ’smirked’ at me and said “Oh yah?

Back then I guess most people considered me a raving lunatic. Now I get to say “I told yah so”. It was inevitable.

Well here we are two years later, Facebook is giving MySpace a run for its money, Google is about to open up and Micrisoft has - already. MySpace can’t afford to get left behind by Facebook, Google or any other platform.

Now lets see who can triangulate and connect them all together. First.

BTW This is the second time this has happened to me. Back in the middle to late 80’s I was on the warpath that ALL computers would have video, graphics and play back audio and that we’d use media for news, communicating, educating and research - in addition to killing aliens and saving the planet earth.

But it wasn’t until Apple and Microsoft discovered what they called ‘multimedia‘ - that all of a sudden folks recognized that my company - MacroMind - had the tools and that I’d been saying this - for years. So I went from being a whacko to genius overnight - and John Doerr invested in us.

That lasted for about :15 minutes.

UPDATE: Apparently it’s all not true.  Just some IM announcement.  Oh well - so much for sooth saying.

Marc, you’ve discovered Nostradamus’ secret: if you make predictions about inevitable events without using specific timeframes, eventually you’ll be “proven” right. :-)

Dossy - I was there…Marc wasn’t just some pundit making random predictions, he put his money where his (big ha!) mouth was and got to work laying key foundation blocks that made the future ‘inevitable’.

Hey Marc, if MySpace did open up, what approach would you want to see them take?

Carbon copy platform play just like Facebook? Would you reccomend they go conservative in order to cover their position or try something innovative and experimental in the hopes of gaining a competitive advantage through innovation (which could of course fail)?

    Just interested in your take.
