End of Q3 blogging from London (6th time this year)
Flew into London City airport from Amsterdam - which is such a civilized way to travel. Took the Docklands Light Rail (DLR) into the Tube hub and onto Gloucester Rd - before I could say “where’s my cell connection?”
Now it’s onto NYC - after a couple of meetings here tomorrow. Been thinking allot about open data, Q4 and how things are gonna appear in January. My bet is that most people will see open standards for social networking as a strong possibility, rather than a glimmer in my eye - from now on.
Since our DataSharingSummit efforts or the BoR, recent beliefs on shared social graphs, white labeled open source plays, and ‘bringing social to software‘ are all moving forward. Can’t wait to hear Jerry’s 100 day report and what Google has to say on Nov. 5th.
Then we can bring that all together at Loic’s LeWeb3 in Paris - Dec. 11-12. Meet me by the Fois Gras station.
Meanwhile…..
Yes Dare - I do find it amusing and encouraging that folks are starting to grok DLAs (digital lifestyle aggregation) along with lifestreams, open social graphs and ‘bringing social to software’. FriendFeed is indeed yet another clone of clones - but we’re headed in the right direction (in general) - assuming that these new kind of aggregators and ‘people feeds‘ DO become standard features.
I should point out that Dare is doing his bit - helping to open up Microsoft’s Windows Live Contacts. Hopefully now that Dare’s back from his honeymoon (CONGRATS dude!) he’ll be able to convince his new wife to come on down to SF for Web 2.0 and be on my ‘open data’ panel.
One man’s fad is another man’s payoff. Hype reins supreme - aren’t you concerned that Britney lost her kids today? Meanwhile Microsoft made $16.4B off of Office last year. That’s not hype, that’s called business.
Speaking of amusement - I have to admit I smiled when I heard that MySpace users will soon be able to ‘drag boxes’ around their personal page. Whooopeee Doo! MySpace better do better than that or else “well do you think they ever heard of Friendster?”
‘Bout time that Facebook recognized the need for better friending controls and constructs. Now I wonder if they’ll ever permit you being a member of more than one network - at a time?
Imagine that - integrating your search product with all that local data, relevant listings and - maybe even - PEOPLE! Oh my goodnesss, that might even appear to be innovation! If Yahoo could successfully integrate relevant info into search - I might even use it - but they’d better hurry, Google is - at this very moment - copying them.
Congrats to Matt Mullenweg and Wordpress.com on surpassing craigslist in terms of traffic. 87M uniques a month ain’t bad for a kid from Houston. Oh yah - congrats to Toni and the rest of the Automattic team as well!
FriendFeed, Proximic, WikiInvest, WidgetBox app accelerator, PeopleJam, WidgetBucks, Zude, Wamba, NewTeeVee Live, Ravelry, Facemaker, AOL music Desktop widget (built with AIR)
Speaking of - fuzzy. GlobalGrind has every reason to succeed - but probably won’t.
AOL is revitalizing wow.com, for a World of Warcraft SNS. I was part of NOW.com - which is now one of the world’s largest IPTV service. Don’t ask how much Richard Li and PCCW paid for now.com - in 1999.
Congrats to Dave Winer for being the #1 human.
Google explains “How to quit Facebook”
Neophotonics and cheal GPON - coolio! FTTH is key to our future.
Doc Searls asks “Should we have an openness Index?” How do we judge is something of some service is ‘open’ enough? Or at all?
Joi Ito recollects from his youth.
Both Loic and Marko love link love. I love the lovers of link love - so that makes me 3 degrees to love.
Congrats to Matt MacAllister and family!
Media Center Extenders - ships. This is gonna make X-Mas pretty interesting. Maybe it’s time for a new Home LAN.
Great to see an interview of my old friend Herbie Hancock. He was the FIRST person to see ‘Undo Me’ our interactive music video love story - created by the MediaBand - in 1992.
Speaking of the music business - congrats to Radiohead for getting it right! Let the fans decide. They’ll probably make the most money ever off of this album. That will show the music industry how clueless they are!
Is it a coincidence that the NHL is being sued for anti-trust and they’re the one sports league that has created a social network - for every team? And for 10 points (sports fans) - what’s the name of the company that created that social network for the NHL? FiveAcross. And is it a coincidence that THIS social networking company is the one purchased by Cisco - for $30M? ‘nuf said.
