Facebook goes part of the way when they check to see if any of my contacts are already facebook members, but it is done strictly off of e-mail addresses.

I find it astonishing that the social networks have been so oblivious to the fact that people want to connect to people. They know who I am, how hard would it be to suggest back to me the people I know. Let's say that I add you as a contact. Why not suggest all the feeds I have on you since I have likely asked you already. Facebook goes part of the way when they check to see if any of my contacts are already facebook members, but it is done strictly off of e-mail addresses. Instead when I add your feed to my feed reader, the service should ask if I want to add a photo stream also.

This would be so much easier if there was one, consistent, way to exchange identity information along the same lines as OpenID.

I hope that is where they are going with this.

Had a chance to sit in on their presentation of this at BarCamp yesterday and it's very interesting what they're trying to do. For now, it's not so much of an end-user tool to interact with, but more the ability to help new social networks provide their new members a useful service for finding those friends that are already registered on the new social network. There are also some other ancillary to the social networks that make this interesting. From the work they will have done here, one can imagine interesting apps that developers will be able to create leveraging the new repository that will result (as a non-profit) fm this exercise. There was also someone fm Plaxo presenting w/them who's name escapes me.
