Congrats to Ning on raising $44M
I’d like to extend hearty congradulations to Marc Andreessen and Gina Bianchini on figuring out how to get a $170M pre-valuation on Ning!
I think the secret is that the majority of the money seems to be coming from not a VC firm - but a private equity firm named Legg Mason. I totally dig this approach and I bet institutional investors will get in on his game - before long.
Its the era of the Series C. All sorts of startups are beefing up, and getting ready for the long haul.
Hopefully this time Marc Andressen will learn from his past mistakes and build a next generation social network infrastructure play. Its not a matter of if, but when.
Its really fun watch the valuation game escalate in this space. We were all shocked when Cisco paid $30M for FiveAcross and now that’s looking like a steal. $170M pre-money valuation is staggering!
Earlier today I posted an open letter to Marc, Gina and Diego Doval on how they can help establish open standards for social networking. I sure they come to our SocialNetworkDevCamp!
BTW - I have to humbly disagree with this statement:
Get Your Own Social Network!
Ning is the only online service where you can create, customize, and share your own Social Network for free in seconds.
PeopleAggregator is also a service where you can create, customize and share your own social network. Many have already.

See! I can be compete and be nice at the same time!

Hi Marc,
“I bet institutional investors will get in on his game - before long.”
It’s already happening in the UK. How-to video producer Videojug raised $20m from the Sloane Robinson hedge fund back in May.
