Marc,

I blogged a comment I left in the sea of others at the Techcrunch post on the topic.

http://shannonclark.wordpress.com/2007/04/13/my-advice-to-rolling-stone-on-their-new-social-network/

In essence I think they (and many other magazines and other niche groups) could (and perhaps even should) launch social networks - but that they will succeed if they deeply leverage what they have (in Rolling Stone's case decades worth of content, longstanding advertising relationships, ongoing content every month from the magazine + lots more that couldn't make print (photos from concerts etc). And do so in a way that respects their readers - and gives them value (and ideally does so in a way that is both unique to the Rolling Stone's site but also embedded into the rest of the web (so not a walled garden but inclusive of conversations and resources elsewhere.

And like I mentioned at Gnomedex last year, I also think we as an industry do ourselves (and the world) a massive disservice by assuming that technology and the web is "only" for the young. My grandmother (in her late 80's) spends as much time online or nearly so as I do - in her case playing bridge (and I'd argue the value of online socializing, shopping, research, and self publishing only grows as you get older - not only do you have that much more to say (and likely grandkids and a lifetime's worth of friends to share it with) but the value of staying connected as your mobility diminishes is huge.

I recently exchanged emails with my grandfather about work he did using some of the earliest computers (he designed planes, was one of the first employees of Rand Corporation, and then spend 20 years designing spy satellites for Aerospace Corporation). Now I'm thinking in the next few months it would be a lot of fun to create a video blog with him discussing what he did in the past, how they used technology - a perspective on a key aspect of our industry (i.e. major, large scale defense spending) which though known has only rarely been discussed (for one thing there are probably still some aspects of his work even decades later that remain classified).

Shannon

(oh and in a few days should be launching my new company - see http://nela.mobi and I'll make sure you get a beta coupon when we send them out)

Oh - you mean there's a connection between the band teh Rolling Stones and the magazine? I didn't know that!

Or perhaps its because the Rolling Stones are the greatest rock and roll band in the world.

Did you even read the article you linked to in this post??? This social network has nothing to do with the band Rolling Stones, it has to do with the magazine, genius! Mike's right, your generation really is too old for this.
