When is a network, not a network?

Imagine my delight when I saw this headline on the front page of the SF Chronicle yesterday:

Niche versions of MySpace — next big thing on the Internet

I love this article as it gets the message across about where we’re at right now. Its great that Marc Andressen is spending all this money to get his message across.

It was also great to hear that they’ve got 10,000’s of networks being created - though I have to point out that when one person clicks a buton and creates a network - that ain’t a network.

All these networks go right up against the premise of Metcalfe’s Law that the more the merrier is what makes neworks successful. We’ve found networks on PeopleAggregator.net - like the ‘Poker Player’s Alliance‘ or ‘2020 Democrats‘ that are perfectrly happy with 100 or more.

But a network fo 3 ain’t really a network. I think one could debate if a network of 10 or 20 is really a network. Probably starting at somewhere between 15-25 and going up is when sociologists would say humans really start to cluster and form into ‘networks’.

This article also brings up that Budwieser Beer is now in the game. Welcome Bud. And their site is free - bringing new meaning to the term “free - as in beer”.

And to Marc A who’s in over $10M into Ning and counting - “thanks dude - keep spending that money and educating the market for us. It helps.”

    Hi Marc

Just to point out the hypocrisy (and rabid envy) you display is quite embarrassing…
