$10 magic price point

I just got back from the SF Virgin Superstore and everywhere you look - CD’s and DVD’s are now $10!

It seems as though the flood gates have opened. I first noticed this price point during X-Mas ‘05 at Target - where all sorts of back catalog and Best Hits compilations were positioned in end-of-aisle stands.

Then came the the racks of off-brand, filling up the warehouse titles that never sell. 1,000’s of titles being dumped for “whatever they can get” prices. Then Tower tubes.

Now I walk into Virgin and Abbey Road, Godfather, Never Mind the Bollacks, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, DeerHunter - the whole thing - the entire back catalog of music and movies - is being offered at $10 a pop!

Well maybe not the entire back catalog, but it sure seemed like it. Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Doors, the Who, you name it - it was there - for sale for $10.

Its a great way for me to educate my sons. “Here - have a ‘Casablanca‘, try this ‘MadMax‘ and tell me what you think about ‘Bridge on the River Kwai‘.

Besdies the obvious benefit to us parents to educate our youth, I gotta believe we’ve reached a tipping point.

The collection of VOD movies on our COMCAST box just keeps increasing and I’m gonna wire up a SlimngMedia box for our summer in Italy - so I can stay in sync with the Sopranos, Entourage and whatever else is hot (new Weeds? Dexter? more Rome!)

Media viewing is truly morphing and for those of us with a memory - we can now reach back and bring to our children great lines like: “of all the gin joints in all he owns in all the world, she walks into mine.”
