Hey Hugh - thanks for the comment
So I was reading the SF Chronicle on the way into the city on BART the other day.
There was this article on SXSW and Hugh Forrest.
In the article, which I can only gauge to be accurate since Hugh is quoted and highlighted, it said:
“Forest said he had 350 suggestions, and of the 150 panels at this year’s conference about 100 came directly from the panel pickers” and organizers chose the top 20 panels.
So to be clear. These aren’t misguided complaints - but facts.
This has nothing to do with the 100 panels chosen by the panel pickers.
This has to do with the OTHER 50 - the ones that Hugh decided upon.
So (as Dave said) for Hugh to hide behind this whole panel picker thing, kind of shows what’s up.
He wants us all to be supportive, fun-loving, digital creatives , but yet the game continues. If you’ve ever been to SXSW - you;ve seen teh cliques, the insiders games and heard about exclusive parties. Sure there are lots of big huge parties, but I never see Hugh at those parties.
What I’d rather hear from Hugh is “Marc - we don’t wanna hear about what you think is important”.
Or even better “Marc - we don’t CARE what you think.”
At least that would be more honest.
But wait! There’s more.
Check out this photo from the party here in SF.

There’s Hugh in a photo with Chris Messina and Tantek Celik.
Now gee, what do these folks have in common:
- Tantek is my GOOD friend, well known as the inventor of microformats - the formats that ignore subscription models, who refuses to admit there are any deficiencies or problems with microformats. Now it just so happens that I am like the only guy who talks about those deficiencies. One of these days those red pill popping cultists who rave about microformats are gonna wake up and figure out what it DOESN’T do. Sure microformats are great for page tags - but HTML pages are not everything - believe it or not.
- Chris - you mean the same Chris of the Citizen Agency who…. (oooops sorry our relationship cannot be talked about… for,,,,,,, ooops sorry can’t speak about that either) Tantek BTW is an “advisor” to the Citizen Agency. I really like Chris, he’s smart as hell and….. oooops sorry I can’t talk about that either.
So clearly Tantek have made sure to tell Hugh to not………………… oh fuck it, I really don’t care.
I guess Lisa won’t go to Austin.
I’d rather go to Italy anyway. The food is better.

Keep making your software, refining the way you explain it and pound the drum over and over.
It’s a big world out there, and there are 365 days each year, SXSW is in a tiny corner of the world, and gets coverage for two or three days mostly people saying they saw someone whose blog they read and they’re nicer in person than they seem on their blog, or not as nice, or exactly as nice. Nice nice nice. Meanwhile if a new idea that made sense to users ever shows up there, you’ll hear about it on the web but don’t hold your breath.
Love ya Marc. Say hi to Lisa and the kiddies for me.

Hugh doesn’t go to parties because he’s a reverse zombie, duh. Besides he’s really boring and you wouldn’t want to hang out with him anyway. I’m guessing you weren’t on the debate team, I’m guessing the guy on the playground shoving my face in dirt. Right?

With all due respect Marc, and a lot is due, this would have more credibility if you’d said it before you found out you weren’t speaking at SXSW. If you had been given a speaker’s slot, I bet we wouldn’t have heard jackcrap about how elitist and cliquey it was, since you would have been happy with being part of the elite clique. How could you accept a speaker’s slot now that you have made those public criticisms, without looking like a hypocrite? You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Paul, you’re so right!!
Marc needs to work on that. I’m trying to build up a little credit with him in this area, truth be told.
He has to stop looking the other way when other people are being abused.
What goes around comes around.
To quote JImmy Cliff: Rasta don’t work for no C-I-A.

[…] hey Hugh - thanks for the comment - this is where he tried to hide and tries to take the high road. I don’t fall for it. […]
