Final Friday in January 07 blog links

Auren Hoffman and Rapleaf have launched UpScoop - a “monitor your friends” site.  his is one I’ll be playing with.  Hopefully Auren will be making a few enemies - so his reputation ranking can be more realistic.

Takafumi Horie - of LiveDoor - claims he was framed. I actually believe him.

Listen - I appreciate Terry Semel blogging.  But don’t shove the same dam marketing drivel into my RSS aggregator. Be honest with us, tell us about your disappointments in Panama’s reception.  Admit it’s shortcomings.  Be real Terry.  This post is just marketing hype - shoved into the blogosphere.  I resent it.  If I find this shit in my aggregator again - I’m un-subscribing to you.  Learn something from Johnathan Schwartz, Ted Leonsis or Mark Cuban.

You mean there are bugs in Microsoft software?

Facebook Pimps Privacy, Calls in CIA - that headline is too perfect to change.  It says it all.

John Battelle is hearing lots of coolio stuff, but he can’t blog it.  It’s all ‘off the record’.

And Jeff Jarvis was cordial to both Michael Dell (who sounded humble and listening) and Steve Case.

Nice Happy Birthday message from an old-timer - who’s building a new kind of aggregator - Hans Peter Brodmo.  Its called Plum.

BooMP3, Midomi, CarGurus, BurdaStyle, Infield Parking, MyStartSpace, The Hunt Zone - thanks Pete for all the links!

I’m gonna start trying to post hot video clips from now on.  Starting with a drunk Paula Abdul

Good luck to MyYearBook - hasn’t anyone told them that it’s NOT about huge centralized databases anymore?

Preparing to sell itself for he upteenth time, frightened deer in the headlights - EMI - is consolidating.

Speaking of ex-Yahoos becoming the CEO of PageFlakes - another ex-Yahoo - Shawn Hardin - apparently has become the CEO of Flock.  This is a classic success through failure story.  I knew this guy at NBCi - and he did nothing.  Then I encountered him at AOL Broadband working for Lisa Hook - where guess what?  Nada - niente.  Then he went onto to work for Lloyd Braun at Yahoo LaLa - where (thank god) both of them have left.  So what does he get for all this hard work and almost no results whatsoever?  He gets to be CEO of Flock.  Mark that one off - its gone.  Zilch.  Niente.  This is the culture of failure that is fostered here in Silicon Valley.  Total incompetence is hidden, as politics plays the ace card over quality.

Zimbra hits 6M paid accounts.  That’ll pay the bills and justify VC investment!

My apologies to Kaliya for not making it to the inevitably boring Liberty thingie.  I just don’t have the time for listening to people talk about Identity.  We’re too busy building systems with ID management baked in.  And I’m not at the Identity Gang thingie today either.  But Dave Winer will be there.  I gave my one question proxy to Dan Farber “when will a php (NON GPL) version of the attribute exchange for OpenID2 - be available?”

Find family-friendly activities at Parentography

FreeConferenceCall.com is sold.  We used that service - everyday. Congrats dude - and I don’t mind if you built a urinal in your bathroom - you deserve it!

It’s OK to fail, I just don’t necessarily believe in bankruptcy. Despite all my ups and downs - bankruptcy has NEVER been an option.  Its a Scarlet letter forever branded on your forehead.

Sam Sethi is getting into OpenID as well - and at least TRYING to understand the issues.

I never got a chance to meet Natali del Conte - but apparently Adam Curry likes what he sees.  But what does looking cute have to do with doing a radio show?  Unless of course Adam is getting into the IPTV content business.  Little known story - I was on Adam’s board at Think NewIdeas.  I originally met Adam - back in 1992 - when we both did the PILOT project for a nascent new content channel called CNet.  The spot was on - Interactive TV.   Then I was there when Adam was sued over the ownership of MTV.com and we named his new web site - Metaverse.com - together.  I really like Adam and I miss doing business with him. Perhaps PodShow needs a social network and blogging platform?

Kottke is predicting a batttle at half time between the ‘85 Bears and Prince.

Good responses to my query on “Are CDN’s necessary?”  Thank guys!

The Knoll brothers are legends.  Little known story - they actually came to us first to have us publish Photoshop. But it was just too much for us, so I told them to go and offer it to Adobe.

Here is the scoop; I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400Oct 2006. I have had nothing but problems with this machine since I got it. Most recently I the LCD cracked! Dell will not replace it because they say it is not covered under warranty. What is this shit? I did absolutely nothing to the computer other than normal use. I have never dropped it, I have never closed anything inside it, I have never dropped anything on it, I have never sat on it…..NADDA They say it was accidcental damage so they say it will cost me $495 to replace the LCD on a computer that is only 3 months old. I havce spent at least 30 hrs on the phone with these thieves and liers talking to people in 3-4 different countries, and not a damn one of them have a clue what they are doing except how to say I am sorry and I cannot do anything, or customerservice will have to handle that, or tech support will have to handle that. blah blah blah. I was PROMISED by a TECH SUPPORT MANAGER last Thurdsday 1-18-07, That they would go ahead and fix it and send it back, I ade sure to write his name down to cover my ass, and sure enough, the losers are renigging on his promise, I have requested him to call me back as well as his manager/supervisor etc etc. Al they want to do is charge me for the LCD. The whole damn computer was only $750.00 and they want me to pay them $500 for the damn LCD……..!!!I do not carry vasaline, but if this is the way they screw people, they better start sending a tube with every system they send out. Marc- IIRC history correctly, the Knoll’s came to Aladdin Systems first (courtesy of Dave Biedny) and for the same reasons as you chose to pass on the product. I am guessing Dave took them to you next.
