Marc's Voice

building the open web one bit at a time

Time to close this month down and move into Black History month

Robert sets the records straight. I just want some of that dumb Intel money! Maybe some of that Seagate money too. Or how ’bout just giving us hard drives? That reminds me of Tom Rielly (of PlanetOut fame) giving away FWB hard drives. I think Tom was the first guy to do that.

Ballmer: Vista Is The Center of Connected Entertainment Strategy - see how quickly they react and shift course? Lets see if Google can keep up.

I like Fred Wilson’s 10 points that he’s learned from Flickr, but he didn’t mention users forming groups and clustering. This organic, community based action (whether purposeful or spur-of-the-moment) is an important structure and construct of the interactive web. Groups are more than just us. Its all of us.

Skinkers, SocialPicks, Outdoorzy, SeatSnapper, Technorati WTF, Share2Me, blidgets coming, Minggl, ShiftSpace

Om analyzes the economics of the DEMO conference and more or less says why I won’t go to those kind of shows. Its all about making money - not software. And I know a few people who aren’t going to NYC for Tony Perkins whatever.

$300k for Ask a Ninja. For how long? A year? An earn out deal?

If Barb likes it, I love it. Good luck Marshall and SplashCast!

Edit recorded TV shows in Vista Movie Maker - score one for Vista! Coolio!

Tale of two losers - one just about killed Parmount, the other almost killed Yahoo. Who would fund losers like this?

“Gates walks out of Daily Show” - This is a very misleading headline and typical of cultural misunderstandings. Valleywag (and I guess others) are making a big deal of Bill Gates walking off the stage on the Daily Show. When I looked at the clip it seems very clean to me - as a techie. You’re done with the snippet, you leave. Not half as bad as when he blew up at Connie Chung.

“In today’s media society, in which hundreds of different media compete for the attention of viewers, readers and listeners, a great deal of importance is attached to presenting oneself.” Sounds like Herbert Burda is into DLAs. Hugh speaks the truth = Without accountable identity, you owe them nothing. So use that delete button with impunity, I say.

Good to see my old friend Fred David getting out and about. I interviewed Fred for the FIRST incarnation (or was it an incantation) of the Marc Canter Show - back in 1994. I’ve known Fred since 1984 - when he was the FIRST journalist to EVER write about us in A+. It was a review of MusicWorks.

And BTW - it looks like you’ll be able to commission your own authentic Hugh cartoon - soon.

Calacanis is out - trying to buy off old Weblogs, Inc. sites that AOL is closing down.

368 and counting

Chris Schmidt reappears. Hey Chris!

Niall Kennedy confirms it - Vista users are NOT nerdy geeks who stay up all night long to stand in line to buy some gadget, box or game. They’re the other 98% of the populace. Vista is the last of the great desktop operating systems. But I wouldnt poo-poo too soon yet - huh? DISCLOSURE: Niall went to work for Microsoft and then left in a huff.

Mark Cuban is producing a reality TV show with Dennis Rodman on HDnet.

2000 bloggers - 2000 faces - I’m not there yet - but hopefully I’ll show up - soon.

Hey all you Drupal developers - now you can just start over and upgrade to Drupal 5 - stopping what you’re doing or else risk forking for life. Unelss you’ve forked already.

Paul Walsh (of Segala) asks: “Have I got this totally wrong (which is likely), or is everyone else jumping on the ‘I love Microformats and OpenID’ bandwagon in case they’re not perceived as ‘with it’?!” - Two different issues here dude. 1) OpenID allows for federated IDs, for SSO (single sign-on) and hopefully (soon) attribute exchange. That’s a good thing. And easily spam resistent. 2) Microformats on the other hand are a partial solution to ‘what are the meta-data standards’. That of course is a good thing to solve, but without a complete solution - it’s - well only partially solved. So I’m not asking for more OPEN microformats - I’m asking for microformats as feeds and file formats not JUST page tags. Get it?

  4. PS: talk about Black History Month… the Super Bowl gets to make black history… it’s about time black coaches get to the Super Bowl considering the contributions black players have made to the sport. And, hey, I know which team you’ll be rooting for!

  7. You’re totally right Marc. In fact, I don’t know why I lumped Microformats and OpenID together. Perhaps I did it because they’re two buzz words I hear quite often from the same people. If you remember me, we had dinner at Le Web 3 and I talked about this type of stuff. Thanks for the trackback - I’ll put up another post on my blog to clarify what I meant. I do ‘get it’ ;) Trust, Identity etc. is my thang.
