Retort back from Jason - who’s a VC now

Jason Calacanis took exception to my statements that what he’s doing is the same as what we did with Marqui:

100% incorrect my friend. You may not have told people if they had to write a positive or negative review, but you did force them to write about Marqui. We on the other hand told folks to pick their own topics and tone. So, you are comparing what you did–which was between a bribe and an advertisement–with what we did which was ethical blogging/journalism. Note: That was a very lame attempt to spin my position… I expect much more from you. :-)

Now that Jason is a VC - I can attack him for being part of that lowly profession.

But seriously  if Jason is NOT asking his bloggers to blog about something specific - then that’s just plain old hiring somebody.  If I was in the micro-publishing business - and I needed copy and content - I guess that’s what I would do.

Jason’s attempts at bolstering Netscape were - well I think we’ll just leave it at ‘debateable’.  Those who liked it - benefited from the changes Jason brought in.  Those who didn’t like the changes - were plum out of luck.  The real issue will be what happens now that Jason is gone.

But back to Marqui - we tried like hell to walk he line between marketing and advertising - trying out a new model and formula.  I think we can look back and say it was sucessful, while the company Marqui did not necessarily take advantage of that opportunity we helped create.
