Marc's Voice

building the open web one bit at a time

Heading into Turkey Day links

Needless to say - I agree and disagree with this guy who wrote - Latest Useless Trend: Adding Social Networking To Everything, Including Cab Rides.  He’s right in that lots of silly VC backed plays are all trying to ride on MySpace’s coattails.  He’s wrong in that distributed, smaller networks are the future.  And as long as “it’s all about people” is the rage, we can’t disallow all the bullshit and Jonie come latelys, so…….

Reminder to self - help promote my wife’s blog more.

Like eh good researcher she is - danah is documenting.  The New Multiply 3.0, congrats to OpenBC - now called Xing on their IPO.  What - there is turnover in social network sites!  No - it can’t be!  Tell me it isn’t so!

The history of Gracenote and CDDB

How do you say “a little too late?” in Java?

XOXO Outliner - I wonder if it imports and saves off in OPML?

Web 2.0 Principles and Best Practices

Prompted by a question from me to David Munns, the chairman of EMI, about Beatles downloads being available - rumors are now flying around about the inevitability of such an event.

In another one of my Web 2.0 question results, when I asked Ross Levinsohn of MySpace if he’d ever open up MySpace, his answer was that they’re:

“considering letting its millions of members transport their profile data to other sites or social networks by introducing so-called APIs … “MySpace is a fantastic property today and if we don’t pay 100 percent attention to it, it’s a risk,”"

“It’s a great idea. It’s something we’ve been looking at and considering,” Levinsohn said Wednesday during the Web 2.0 Summit, in response to an audience member question.  [I was that audience member!]

Kevin Werbach says he’s not interested in rehashing he same old questions, but I wonder when Kevin will actually ask any of his AT&T to answer the questions we’ve poised to them - for years.  Why don’t you turn on all that Dark Fiber you got?  Twice - Kevin had this AT&T guy up on stage and wouldn’t let me ask him that question.  “Hey Kevin - no need to wonder about new qurestions when the old one’s aren’t answered yet.”

Media ia a first class citizen in Vista!

Mark Cuban is now Dan Rather’s boss.

Everybody wants to talk about poor Nick Douglas losing his job.  Others are already defending themselves against Nick Denton’s new version of Valleywag. Me - thank god I’ve been left alone - for now.

SF Beta party - Nov. 16.

I’m actually waiting for someone to develop an active social network around commuting - both for those carpooling in, (car-to-car networking - sharing music lists over their radio, instant messaging and voice-activated stuff for drivers), as well as taking the train in - whose on what train at what time in which car.
