More on media feeds, aggregator support and coolio functionality

OK - the conversation continues.  I just got this from Greg Reinacker (who I consider one of the GodHeads of aggregators):

Marc -

The NewsGator Online platform supports Media RSS, and exposes the content through its API.  The NewsGator Online GUI doesn’t yet surface this, but it’s on the list.

FeedDemon is an example of one of our clients that supports Media RSS, and I believe Nick has sent you screenshots of this.  Our other clients will follow suit, each on their own schedule.

We also support enclosures through the entire product line, and each product surfaces those in its own way.

OK so Greg

So here’s the thing - its incredible that Media RSS is getting support - RIGHT ON - but that’s half the story.

What we need are folks like yourself to do (I’m referring to your product as you) to give us SPECIAL UI functionality - that renders, plays back, supports playlists, in general - makes it easy for folks to listen to, reply to, etc. - media.

Wouldn’t it be coolio if:

- one could reply - by audio or video - to a media post - just as easily as they hit the ‘reply’ button in their email client?

- one could collect tgoether their ‘morning listening’ podcasts - into a playlist - and have them all play back, while they’re cooking breakfast and getting teh kids ready for school?

- one could assume that since media was part of a post - that they’d get some indication that media was “in there”

- that tagging get included in this mix - and rating - and that somehow reputation was also supported?

- that in general, media become as easy to work with - as text.  So that means copying onto the “live clipboard” and moving it between systems, having full featured editord available (as a premium service - of course), maching up facilitated, mix-ins encouraged, you know - make Cory Doctorow happy.

- and finally, wouldn’t it be even cooler coolio that media aggregators connect together - so that different features could be utilized - by end-users.  Mary Hodder has abunch of media aggregator vendors who all want to share profile data, subscription lists, aggregated content.  It sure would be nice to facilitate open standards in aggregators - beyond just RSS and Media RSS.

Just sayin…….

Ha - sorry Marc, I guess I didn’t read your entire post before sending you that email. :-) I agree with you - I actually had a meeting this morning with some folks on our team talking about some of this kind of stuff. So yes - we’re working on some of the things you’re talking about…I can’t yet go into too much more detail than that here on your blog. :-)

Another one for you, my FlickrRivr tool is built around Media RSS, because that’s how Flickr communicates the pictures in its feeds. Come over for a demo, I think you’ll find it interesting. :-)

[…] Greg Reinacker sees my point - we have a long way to go til aggregators are media-ized. […]

[…] And then Mark chimes in (far more eloquently than I - especially ’cause I left out the media copy-pasting that is needed to take this to the next level - arrggghhhh) . It’s funny because this is just the sort of thing Ze Frank does with his intros, Jaffe does with his Across the Sound podcast (which is frakkin awesome) - the idea of consumers becoming producers… not just listening to podcast, but sending in an audio file as viewer mail, or sending a little snippet of home made video for the introduction […]
