Jason Kolb has it right
Jason Kolb has an amazingly close and similar vision of the world. He’s gone through all the idealism and now he’s posting on ‘how to make money’ with open source social networking. Yup - been there, done that. I think if and when Jason actually goes off and does what he says he’ll do, that he’ll come ot many of the same conclusions we did:
- don’t use GPL
- hosted solutions rock, especially when they enable folks to get their own entire networks under their domain. Then give them the option fo splitting revenues from ads or paying for their own stand alone net.
- give these hosted solutions as much customization control as you can
- open standards baby - is the way to go!
- many of these ID systems out there are too dam - rigid and idealistic! And ultimately impractical!
- source code available is really what counts. Doesn’t matter what its called, just gotta give that code away to everyone. Because we baked our own clean room implementation and we’re ‘built it for you’ ind of guys and gals, we’re gonna make a little money off of some licenses as well - but ONLY to those mean old commercial entities - not individuals or non-profits or developers or humans or……
Its great to know that there are folks like Jason out there - to connect our distributed mesh - to. I wonder if he’ll use php, Java, python or ASP .NET?
Thanks to Richard for the pointer.
