Vox#10 - Hustling = what makes SixApart successful

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Now for the grand finale.
I’ve known many of the board members and players at SixApart for years.  Besides my minimal exposure to Ben and Mena, I can safely say that much of 6A’s board is made up of really smart people, how know what they’re doing.
They know how to hustle.  Andrew Anker (head of bizdev) [...]

Vox#9 - Community = How to get a bunch of folks to use your stuff

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Now we’ ve come to the secret weapon of Vox - its community aspects.
What they’ve done is carfeully study Flickr’s approach to social networking and glommed onto much of it.  One simply says “this is a connection” and they have the option of adding attributes that say “they’re my friend” or “they’re family” or both.  [...]

Vox#8 - Mobile

Monday, August 14th, 2006

SixApart has been one of the early adopters of mobile moblogging and they even bought a mobile blogging company recently.  Joi’s relationship with Nokia brought them early compatiblity with TypePad.
So it comes as no suprise that Vox has these same mobile moblogging aspects.
But I’d sure like to see some other coolio mobile blogging features as well [...]

Vox#7 - Hosted Experience = business model

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

I have just whipped through six posts on Vox and now I’ve come to what some people ONLY care about.
“How do I make money with this stuff?”
Ah yes - money. Money makes the world go round.  That’s what I get paid for - to help people figure all that out.  So this post is for [...]

Vox#6 - Ease of use = using Ajax effectively

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

There are a number of moments inside of Vox when you just wished someting did something like…..
oooop…..
…..it does!
I hate to have to go to someone’s page - to establish a relationship with them.  Boom - it worked!
I want to drag and drop - yup - that worked too.
TRy to leave a page without saing what [...]

Vox#5 - Microcontent Publishing = something is better than nothing

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Enough has been written here on structuredblogging, microformats and microcontent to shake a stick at.  We helped create some open sourc elibraries for Wordpress and Moveable Type - and we’re supporting a full range of microformats in PeopleAggregator - along with the StructuredBlogging interface baked in - as well.
So trust me when I tell yah [...]

Vox#4 - Integrated Media Galleries

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Way back when I was working on 1UP.com, I asked them for integrated media galleries.
I noticed that we were importing artwork as avatars, into contests, using them for blog posts and we used images in groups as well.  So instead of having folks independently load images into each section, I proposed that we integrate all; [...]

Vox#3 - New distribution channels = render RSS in Vox

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

As I was cruising through Vox I noticed that Scobleizer and Om were there - but they hadn’t posted anything.  Obviously they had been invited in - but were too busy with their ‘day jobs’ to worry about posting on Vox.
So I started thinking about these new kind of publishing empires and how they’re going to [...]

Vox#2 = Hardwired interfaces = ‘gotta start somewhere’

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

My second piece on Vox is going to focus in on the hardwired interfaces they’ve built-into the product.
Rather than worry about supporting an open standards (at first) they’ve gone and provided some pretty compelling experiences - which work - just right.
They work just right because they show that SixApart knows that your photos, videos and [...]

Vox#1 - Neighborhoods = dynamic aggregation channels

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

So I’m cruising through Vox - recreating that effect I had when I first cruised through Orkut.  I’m clicking on faces that brings me to someone’s profile page where I then click on their list of neighbors and see their whole list of connections which then causes me to click on someone else’s face.

I quickly [...]
