Questioning numbers, focus and the REAL market

I ran into this chart - via Fred Wilson’s post on it. Fred is all excited about buying Yahoo low - which I would have done if: a) I believed in the stock market, which I don’t, b) I had an dispoable income (which I don’t - I only invest in my own products) or if c) I believed in the stock market, which I don’t.

Oh - did I repeat myself?  Well I just don’t buy the whole Wall St. scam thing.  Seems like a great way for white guys to get over on a bunch of suckers.  But anyway a few things jumped out at me - when looking at this chart:

1.  It’s of the US market - only?  Who tracks the US market - only?  That’s about as ‘non-web-like as Jonathan Abrams trying to lock people in and say he owns them.

2.  Gmail is still in its infancy.  Google News is last.  Google Talk is last.  Orkut is last (that’s Google too.)  Gee if you don’t look at Search - seems like Google ain’t that important.

3. Yahoo 360 has made it up to 4.6M.  Wow!  I had no idea!

4.  Xanga and MSN Spaces ain’t social networks.  Same with LiveJournal which didn’t make it onto this list.  Gee - NONE of trhe SixApart products are on this list. I guess its time for them to go mainstream - with Vox.

5.  What’s the difference between AOL Instant Messenger and AOL service Instant Message?  That’s so weird.

6.  Where’s YouTube?  How come there’s no category for video repositories?  Could it be that none of the GYMAA folks are players - so that this category just doesn’t count?  Well it should!

7.  Where’s Bebo?  Its bigger in Europe than MySpace. I just hate charts that are ONLY the US.  What idiots for teh NY Times to be so limited in their focus.  Bad NY Times.  BAD!  Only 2.2M Skype users. What a joke.

8.  Congrats to Frappr for making the list!

    Google concerns

Is Google forgetting or overplaying its entrepreneurial roots? Jeff Nolan and Silicon Beat each had postings today that give me pause for conern as a Google shareholder. While wiz-bang features draw in the new users and win hearts and minds,

I can not believe these numbers at all. 44,000 gtalk users in all of US? Each time you log into gmail, it logs you into gtalk as well. That alone would give gtalk more users. You are right about focussing on US only numbers. Orkut, for example, is extremely popular in Brazil and India. Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody has heard of myspace in India but there are millions of Indians on Orkut.
