The state of Web 2.0 - by Dion Hinchcliffe

Dion Hinchliffe’s “State of Web 2.0″ has been getting some attention - so I thought I’d comment on it.

Dion says:

[Web 2.0] describes the inversion of control of information, processes, and software wholesale over to the users of the Web.  This is because users now generate the majority of content these days and they also provide the attention that drives almost everything online  financially (particularly advertising).

Which is exactly true. I can’t see how anyone could or would argue with that statement.  Dion spends a lot of time studying this stuff and he’s even written on 10 offshoots from the Web 2.0.

I particularly like the chart Dion did - The Architecture of Participation:

I love doing charts like this myself.  This chart seems very biological - with amoeba shaped bubbles and organic migrating crowds surging towards truth.

I think the growth of broadband has been a lot more significant to Web 2.0 - than Dion lets on (he doesn’t even mention it) - but in general everything he says is right on.

Check it out.

DION IS GETTING INTO A LOT OF BULLSHIT! HE HASN’T REALLY ANSWERED THE MAIN QUESTION - WHAT IS WEB2.0? hE HAS GOT TOO VERBOSE AND MADE A SIMPLE THING VERY COMPLICATED.

WEB2.0 BASICALLY DOES WHAT YOU COULDN’T DO IN WEB1.0 (THE DOT COM BOOM OR WHATERE YOU WOULD WANT TO CALL IT) - TODAY, THERE IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE, THE BANDWITH AND THE TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE AND TO CONVEY WEB APPLICATIONS TO USERS, WHICH WAS AN IMPOSSIBILITY, PROBABLY SAY A DECADE OR TWO BACK, WHEN WEB1.0 WAS ALL THE RAVE.

A GOOD EXAMPLE WOULD BE OF GOOGLE. GOOGLE ISN’T DOING ANYTHING NEW. THEY ARE JUST EXECUTING AND MAKING APPLICATIONS THAT DIDN’T FIND A MARKET AND DIDN’T HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY TO SUSTAIN ITSELF DURING THE WEB1.0 ERA!

TODAY, TECHNOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE HAS IMPROVED. USER TECH IQ HAS RISEN. YOU CAN’T EASILY BULLSHIT YOUR WAY THROUGH. AND THEREFORE, THERE IS A LOT THAT YOU CAN DO NOW THAT YOU COULDN’T DO BEFORE! THIS IS THE WEB2.0 ERA (OR, IF YOU’D WANT TO GIVE IT A BETTER NAME - DOT COM BOOM: VERSION 2)

    THERE’S TONS MORE, I COULD TALK ON - - - BUT IT’S JUST MY TWO CENTS . . . FOR NOW!
