Cyworld’s Korean aesthetics in a US market
Lots has been written and allot more is coming comparing Cyworld’s success in the Korean market versus how it will be received here.
Cyworld is the only social network owned by a Telco, so its conservative, slow moving and has the resources to not only can take on MySpace - but also unite and monetize that giant sleeping giant known as ‘mainstream’ advertisers.
MySpace (IMHO) seems like a soft porn jungle which is the LAST place I’d want my kids hanging out - and teh last place Johnson & Johnson, Ford or Nabisco wants to advertise. But Cyworld (in its current form) is more like a morph of Habbo Hotel, some cutey pie anime game and a innocuous AOL portal page. Add to the mix buying virtual flowers to ‘flirt with’ (how safe is THAT!) and Korea’s largest streaming music service - and you have a money machine - pumping out over $12M in profit every year.
So what happens when Cyworld finally opens its doors here?
Hmmmmm - time will tell.

Not sure MySpace has anything to worry about, but rather folks like Tagged that are focused on the younger demographics. TagWorld appears to also be getting quite a stream of people on the younger end of MySpace’s demographics, so they too might feel some pressure fm Cyworld. Cutesy stuff is more likely to appeal to the younger demos.
