Apologies for ourmedia

There’s an excellent post out comparing the top 10 video sharing sites and they point out how shitty ourmedia.org is.

I agree.

Its been a year now since we first launched it and ALL the problems are still there.  Its downright embarassing and I wanna apologize for that.

JD ignores this and goes on and on about - well yah gotta love JD - but that doesn’t make the shitty software any better.  He talks about community and doing all these things - but without programmers - nothing gets done.  Funny how things work like that - huh?

I also still wonder when the plugs and thanks come for us building the dam thing.  He acts like he did it himself.

Whatever.

So my apologies - again for the shitty software.  That’s one reason we’re being so dam fanatical with PeopleAggregator.   We want it to set a new level of excellence.

Hey, Marc — how about open-sourcing the software behind Ourmedia.org and getting the community to contribute code. Appoint a small core of 2-3 folks as “release management” to ensure that nobody sneaks in malicious code — these release managers review all commits to makes sure, at worst, that the code isn’t malicious, and at best, that the code isn’t outright crap.

Then, push the code every 2 weeks up to the live site. Incremental improvements, continuously.

I’d really love to build a new Web 2.0-style startup just this way. I don’t know if the idea could/would work, but it’d be fun to find out.

I am a former lead audio moderator for OurMedia, and I agree that the software and server problems are the downfall of the whole system. However, I don’t think that “you” need to apologise for it.

From what I’ve seen, JD and the others working on the project are passionate about the “idea” and mission behind OurMedia, but the ability to raise enough money to upgrade the system and pay programmers and moderators is OurMedia’s big downfall.

For over 6 months, I spent an average of about 4 hours a day weeding out copyright infringing material from the site. The combination of the slow response time of the servers and the fact that I was doing it on a volunteer basis brought me to a decision to bail out of being a moderator, all together.

I’m still a user at OurMedia, and I upload various things from time to time. I, personally, would like to thank you for building the initial site. I still believe in the mission behind the site, but I hope that they can figure out some way to get more organized and streamline the whole experience.
