“We need microformats” - Bill Gates
Tim O’Reilly told me that he had to clue Bill in on microformats the night before.
But as far as you can tell from this video - Bill has been familiar with it for years and it’s a core part of Microsoft’s strategy. That’s the genius of Bill Gates. Embrace and extend.
Tim did a pretty good job of interviewing Bill and also getting in plugs for his own conferences - at the same time.
Congrats to Tantek and the rest of the microformats folks. We support microformats in StructuredBlogging.org.

[…] Marc Canter says Bill Gates learned to say “microformats” just in time for his Mix 06 talk. Imagine if he had learned to say BitTorrent. Amazon is leading the way, busting through as the first major Internet company to embrace BitTorrent. It’s time for them all to follow suit, there are lots of non-infringing applications, like podcasting, for example.. […]

[…] My 6 predictions on microformats Joshua Allen helped organize the microformats and structured blogging unofficial session at Mix this week with Marc Canter and Tantek. Joshua has posted 6 predictions on the topic of microformats that are worth a read (thanks to Tommy for the pointer). FWIW (inspired by Joshua) here are my six predictions on the topic: 2006 will be a hot year for microformats, but 2007 will be even hotter. Most Microsoftees will not have heard of microformats nor know what they are by the end of 2006. But those Microsoftees that need to know, will. The OPML freaks will embrace microformats. Those who said structured blogging wouldn’t take off will come around as they realize that using microformats in blogs is structured blogging Some people will say microformats won’t take off, no matter what New microformat-based business will blossom over the next two years - Tags (did you know these were microformats?): microformats structuredblogging opml web tech Filed Under: Web, Tech, OPML, microformats […]

[…] In an interesting move, Bill Gates indicated that microformats are a core part of Microsoft’s strategy. Marc Cantor noted that Tim O’Reilly had clued Bill in on microformats the night before the announcement in this video. I am not as concerned about the timing - just the fact that Bill is talking about them. The first time I heard Tantek speak about microformats I was excited - structured data WILL change the internet as we know it. Since then I have made sure we use them everywhere possible (specifically in the Big in Japan toolbox). I think this announcement by Bill Gates will only hasten the adoption of microformats. […]
