Somebody just got hustled!
They really should have asked any of us - first.
Kontiki’s claims of installed base and support - were just plain out lies. Kontiki was a joke from the outset and represented yet another failure for Marc Andressen and Mike Homer.
So they’re coming out of that debacle - with cash. I think they received more than that in VC - so it’s really the VCs who are coming out semi-whole.
But what does this say about Verisign?
Who uses Kontiki?

Marc:
I’ve been reading you on and off for the last 4 years and love your thinking. I normally would have read your post with a “huh?” but I’ve learned to trust you. Take a look at this old DaveNet:

Scary how right you were about multimedia content production…
Especially take note of your comments around RAM, sound, support and set-top boxes.
Go Marc!

Hi Marc,
Make what you will of this, extracted from a press release I was sent last September (esp Sky namecheck in the last paragraph…):
“London & Amsterdam, 9 September 2005: ioko, a specialist in digital and on-demand media, today announced the impending launch of Europe’s first secure and legal peer-to-peer Video-on-Demand (VoD) system with partner Kontiki.
…offering which is designed to implement VoD broadband television (TV) platforms throughout Europe.
…The introduction of this secure peer-to peer network, termed the Grid system, means that viewers can now experience fast, uninterrupted downloads as well as full content viewing. In addition, it eliminates piracy issues and protects content owners’ copyright.
…ioko and Kontiki will be working together to deliver tailored services to design, develop and manage dynamic Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and VoD solutions for a broad spectrum of media companies, varying in size.
ioko’s partnerships with major broadcasters such as Sky and BBC are set to change the way the mainstream broadcasters offer and deliver content to their viewers in the new high definition television space.”
Best,
Deirdre
