Mynumo
My old friend William Volk tells me about a new company he’s involved with: Mynumo.

In Bill’s words:
Every day millions of people create pictures, music and videos.
Now they can get paid for it. myNuMo has opened up the $5B Mobile market to anyone who creates content. Mobile is so complicated that even experienced media companies have problems doing it right. NuMo’s unique technology and online marketplace is the solution.
Creating the next ringtone hit is as easy as making a phone call. Upload your music, pictures, and videos and NuMo does the rest. Our existing agreements with major mobile carriers allows us to sell user-generated content to over half of all mobile subscribers in the USA.
NuMo, Create It, Show It, Sell It …
We’re live now, selling to Cingular/AT&T users and T-Mobile just turned on today.
In addition to ringtones, wallpapers, and videos we will be enabling text messaging services.
We’re also going to make it easy for creators to show there content on their own or other websites via our ‘NuMoMatic’ tool that allows you to embed previews on any website.
Here’s some more information about myNuMo: http://www.numomedia.com/general.php?inc=faq
Remember, no deal is a good deal if customers can’t easily buy your content.
myNuMo delivers directly to handsets, detecting handset model, billing customers directly on their phone bill, making purchasing simple. myNuMo gives creators their own page and will allow ‘keyword’ purchases from a shortcode for customers. Independent bands can sell to their customers just like the large ringtone companies.

If it has become so easy that anyone can create content for mobile. Why will someone pay for ringtones/wallpapers unless there is a brand associated?

It isn’t easy to PUBLISH mobile content. That’s why we created MyNuMo.
1. There are 100’s of different handsets with different formats for ringtones, wallpapers, and videos.
2. Customers want to buy content billed to their phone, not use credit cards. myNuMo has the billing systems in place with the major carriers.
3. Seamless delivery of content, no typing in URL’s with a phone keypad is also something customers want.
As to brands, think of the “long tail”. Maybe a local band doesn’t have a ringtone deal with a publisher, now with myNuMo they can publish ‘tones directly to the fans. Look at some of the content on the site, there are hillarious ringtones from a artist in England, pictures of men and women from Brazil etc….
FYI: The top selling wallpaper last year (by the carriers) was a “blue dragon”, it’s not always clear where the hits are going to come from.
Finally you’ll see some major content brands showing up on myNuMo as well. That will drive traffic.

I tried to do something very similar to this a few years back, but if you’ve got the platform ready, I’ll load up my content. I’m also specifically interested in your text service thingy, as we’ve had a lot of success with certain classes of text-based content, but we’ve never been able to afford to launch our services in the US. So, when are you coming to the UK?

Yes, I believe the text messaging stuff will be the BIG SURPRISE for myNuMo. Think of all the people who could launch everything from daily gardening tips to surf reports from their favorite spots.
Should be on in a matter of a few weeks (I’m getting messages every day from the system in development.)
I want to launch in the UK ASAP. We’re off to CTIA this week to talk to our messaging aggregators. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

and what do you think of this service?

Very needed information found here, thank you for your work

Wondering how our new nonexclusive content will do with this service.
The only thing is that…how long will it take us to upload 1500
and ongoing developed mobile wallpapers/screensavers? We also
have many of our wallpapers in 52 sizes each. This could take longer. We actually have
20,000 files and growing. We have some really neat stuff. Just wondering
how long would this take, and if it would do as well as our aggregators generate
and market for us.

I guess this is not designed for 20,000 items of content and wallpapers in 52 sizes. !nyway nowadays content should be repurposed for the handset, rather than being produced in 52 sizes!
