Coolness is starting to flow out of Yahoo
I ran into Joy Mountford the other day in Yahoo’s cafeteria - at the salad bar (yes - I’m starting to eat salad…..) She’s working for her old boss - Larry Tessler.
Not sure if it’s Joy or any of her team - but we discovered a couple of coolio user interface widgets yesterday - which are part of the developer network “UI Library”.
I sure hope these controls not only make it into all sorts of Yahoo yumminess (like Matt MacAllister’s social media tools) - but that they get distributed to the wind so everyone can enjoy them.
Animated TreeView widget - is exactly what Marc Barrot did with activeRenderer - but now it’s from Yahoo. It’s got a sexy fade-up feature as well. Just make sure it works with OPML and we’re rocking……
Basic sliders - everybody needs sliders right? - vertical - horizontal. This is the real spirit of open source. Come up with something coolio - and jusr give it away. And notice - not once did they mention the A word (Ajax.) This just shows (to me) that Ajax is just another marketing hyped term done by some UI company - just when their rep was being ruined by lots of bad UIs and over zealous promises. So they figured “well hell let’s use our relationship with O’Reilly and Cory Doctorow and Technorati to some good. Let’s invent a new technology and we’ll call it Borox!” No - Ajax sounds more manly.
Finally - I noticed this on my MyYahoo page this morning.
Notice the coolio little MPEG icons?
This is how all aggregators should act. Discover media - delineate it out - as media.
And put an easy to understand command like “listen” next to the icon.
Not sure how long they’ve had that - but it’s coolio. Just shows that they ain’t done with MyYahoo - yet.
