Ajax Home Pages
Richard MacManus uses a term that Techcrunch floated - referring to Portals 2.0. Richard also brilliantly cross-links ot his own blog - bringing flow from his ZDnet column over to his own blog.
The combination of the two posts elucidates the battle lines between big boys and small fry - and where the need for Open APIs is made clear.
Richard does work for us (as he transparently makes clear in his posts) so I’ll keep all insider nuances to a minimum - but let me be blunt. Our client AOL is working on this sort of stuff - too.
Imagine is AOL modules could support and playback Google and Microsoft modules.
And imagine if the Goolgle Page creator took risks (which Google doesn’t do) and it actually did some coolio things which I can’t tell you about (or else I’d have to kill you.)
What you’ll have to do is trust me on this - this war ain’t over with yet and Google and Microsoft ain’t the only players offering up Portals 2.0. The power and leverage of AIM is about to be unleashed. And besides who cares about Google and Microsoft? It’s all about MySpace nowadays.
I wonder when MySpace will launch their own ad network?
There are more people on MySpace than the entire blogosphere right now. They’re signing up 150k people - a day. The only good news about MySapce is that they’ll never open up their network and let us all play together - so we’ll have to methodcially knock down this house of cards.
MySpace is the new Friendster - the closed, old school data silo which we’re all jealous of. Me - I joined back when they had 100k members and Tom actually responded to emails. So let’s remember how MySpace prospered.
Music
Sex
Throwing raves (which connects the two together.)
That’s why I always pitch new kinds of roadshows to our clients - as it’s where cyberspace meets meatspace. Now you have an idea of how badly MeetUp fucked up.

Open APIs driving what Richard calls portals 2.0 is a very exciting growth area with a lot of potential.
There’s only one thing I don’t understand:
What’s AOL? ….. Some kind of new protocol?……

That MySpace is bigger than the blogosphere is entire untrue. This is based on the notion that Technorati is tracking 30 million blogs and that that must be all the blogs. Technorati tracks less than 20% of all blogs and there is actually between 100 - 200 million blogs, closer to 200m.

[…] I have been on a kick lately about closed community silos. MySpace is one of the worst offenders these days, but it is no different from BlackPlanet or CollegeClub. That is why MySpace is doomed. Everyone is wanting to copy MySpace, but MySpace just copied technology for 1998. I am fully convinced that MySpace will end up getting it’s ass kicked by open communities that interoperate. Marc Canter has a post about this today: MySpace is the new Friendster - the closed, old school data silo which we’re all jealous of. Me - I joined back when they had 100k members and Tom actually responded to emails. So let’s remember how MySpace prospered. […]
