Robert Scoble snaps his fingers - I jump

So I just sigend up for Mix06.

I’ve been going to these Microsoft technology conferences since 1985.  I love the part when Bill Gates opens up the floor to questions.

By then - I’ll have positioned myself squarely in front of the microphone, ready to ask some elucidating, insightful, cutting edge question.

This year I can tell you already what I’m going to ask:

“Hey Bill, it’s great that you got Tim O’Reilly on stage and this whole conference thingie, but it’s time you put your money where your mouth is.  We’d like you to support some of our ‘open source infrastructure’ efforts both by including compatiblity with these standards and by throwing a little chump change our way - to help promulgate these standards.”

Specifically I’m talking about:

- ourmedia.org

- structuredblogging.org

- various open, shared XML servers for microcontent

- redirectthis.com

- outputthis.com

- itags.org

- and I’m sure I’ll figure out  a couple of others…..

Thanks Bill!  Since you’re Man of the Year and you love to give money away, I thought it would be nice if you could help us make Web 2.0 come true.

If you do - then we’ll all mesh into Vista.

One thing I always enjoyed at conferences with open mics is when the audience would be given some type of clickers (little metal “frog” type, wooden clackers, anything that makes noise). This lets audience members gracefully provide feedback to a question which is actually a self-promotional speech — like a vaudeville hook, but decentralized. More conferences could take advantage of audience feedback in this way, I’d wager.

[...] Marc Canter, you’re so funny! All I have to do is snap my fingers, huh? Truth is I’d jump if Marc told me to too. We’re all jumpy. I see that JD, over on Marc’s blog, about audience participation via little clickers. Oh, the first time I saw that done was at CNET’s Builder.com Live conference. Not sure who came up with that idea, but Dan Shafer, the guy whothat conference liked those. Anytime someone got too commercial you’d hear tons of little clicks. It was even funnier if the speaker wasn’t in on thefeedback mechanism. Then it turned into a game. Click. Click. Click. Click. Filed under: Blog Stuff @ 1:41 pm # [...]

I just registered, too! I jump when Scoble snaps his fingers as well. Sigh. I’m such a groupie.

I can’t wait for you to stir the pot!

Why do conferences have to be so expensive? Things like Mix06 should be free for college students.

Mix06 will be much more about Microsoft and creating a Web2 world based on Microsoft than anything else. This is a conference for those who are still true believers in Microsoft. Having met Gates and Allen in Seattle in the late 70s and also having been a Microsoft based consultant for far too long, I have to say that I just don’t believe in Microsoft anymore. If you go to this and get value out of it, then great. My take on the whole thing is posted at http://forevervoyaging.blogspot.com and one of Scoble’s coworkers has already defensively posted there about Mix06.

What John Dowdell mentions sounds a lot like, essentially, the first back-channel! I hope to be at Mix 06, too, maybe even as a presenter. See y’all there.
