Mashed Potatoes, code or just how un-cool it is to be cool
I tried to believe Stowe Boyd that the conference he put on at Berkman would be different - but it wasn’t. I flew all the way out there (Beantown) to do what? Listen to a boot camp on Web 2.0 for Harvard professors and East Coast intelligensia??
I tried to help Chris Pirillo make Gnomedex into something different - a 24/7/365 kind of thing - but at the end of the day - it’s the same old same old. Though coolio - don’t get me wrong. I just wished Chris would take a risk - instead of just riding that gravy train.
Tony Perkins, Kevin Werbach, IDG, O’Reilly, SXSW - a 1,000 other FlashForwards, look backwards, think about it - please. But at the end of the day - anarchy still reins supreme in the valley of camps.
I’m not saying that we don’t need E3, CES, PC Forum or SIGGRAPH - it’s just that I’m getting older and I’m dam tired of all the same old same old. Dave Winer has made it clear - he’s only going to ‘unconferences’ from now on.
So I have to admit it’s kind of amusing watching Chris Messina pre-empt David Berlind - and create a mashed potatoes camp. It must be the XMas dinner he had. I’m sure Chris has his reasons - but I told David “don’t worry about Chris or those folks - just do your thang.”

A 24/7/365 thing is kinda difficult without the infrastructure.

Yeah well we guessed that one from your attendence at Les Blogs!!!
But seriously, I do agree. I think too many of us turn up to conferences, suffer the same old 80% of conference speeches that we already know but enjoy the “hallway channel” and go home feeling “ok”.
Maybe unconferences are the way forward, I don’t know. But what I do want is an “experience” that consists more than just units of speeches.
I really should organise my own conference…
