Snarky Castles in the Sky - from one believer to a trio of nay sayers…..
I can’t help but comment on what Dave Winer and Mike Arrington have been spouting off about recently.
I certainly do see a conspiracy surrounding Tim O’Reilly - but John Battelle just seems to me to be your average Joe entreprenuer who’s able to read the tea leaves and leverage it to the hilt. While Tim ain’t so innocent.
Meanwhile my buddy Richard MacManus is acting literary like .
Me - well I’ve decided to sit out the ‘expostulating’ school of thought and get on with building the Web 2.0.
That’s what ourmedia.org is all about.
That’s what StructuredBlogging.org is.
That’s what the PeopleAggregator APIs will be all about - and the new kind of tool we’re building that will saute some brain cells and add some garlic for taste. Take that sauted brain cells, add it to your digital lifestyle and take your personas to town.
This really is an exciting time - but I don’t think this all falls into just two schools of thought. There are a whole bunch of Chinese and Indian hackers (and Bulgarians, Russians, Croats, Italians, Kiwi-ers, Hungarians, etc.) all who have their own angle going on here. Or at least THINK they do - which is all that’s important here.
Then there is the “small is good” school of thought and “let’s invent a buzzword that everyone is doing anyway and ride that pony” school of thought.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what Battelle and O’Reilly do, as long as there’s enough disclosure. I know O’Reilly doesn’t do enough of that, but I don’t know about Battelle. That’s between him and his conscience, really — I don’t judge him.
I think a lot of the things you list here fall under #2, and my willingness to indulge Arrington goes for everyone else, including you! I’ve found the discussion here around structured blogging fascinating. I think you’re getting new grounding as you actually test your ideas outside the cloisters of conference-goers and hypesters. Go get em Marquis. I find it interesting.

As usual Marc, you got me - hit the nail on the head. I tend to get all pompous and literary every now and then
That’s what you get with an English Lit graduate
Thanks for the reality check.

I’m dreaming of a snark Chrismas.
Just like the ones I used to know.
Where the snarkdrops glisten.
And children listen.
To snarky blogposts in the sky!
I’m snarky about snark Snarkmas.
Snark snark snark snark snark snark snark snark snark.
With interesting clothing.
And evildoers.
To her snarkdrops passing by.
Lalalalalal.
