New era of blogging
Barb groks the relationship between Comet and DLAs (as usual.)
I really think this officially ushers in the new era of blogging. New tools like Y! 360, Structured Blogging, Comet and the upcoming - GoingOn Network - which we’re working on - will bring to the forefront the notion of ‘microcontent’ - structured content.
In fact - we’re working on the new version of Structured Blogging - as well. Being in this position will help us establish clear standards for these new schemas and create a whole new generation of APIs.
By taking a ‘compatiblity box’ approach we’ll support three dimensions of micro-content publishing:
- 1. The traditional XML into a feed and subscribe to it - pipeline. This is done with RSS (in all it’s variants), along with rdf and Atom as well.
- 2. A new approach which microformats take - which just focuses on putting tags into the HTML page - and having search engines discover and index this micro-content. This is also what the Structured Blogging format does - as well.
- 3. Then there’s this notion of files. Of storing, importing and exporting micro-content in various file formats - specifically HTML and OPML.
So as this new era unfolds - let’s start to focus on END USER BENEFITS and get beyond the format battles. I for one am fasinated with the notion of open souce, free, non-profit XML servers - which are inter-connected
By combining micro-content publishing, aggregation, social networking (with granular leveks of access controls and drag and drop ‘easy to use’ hosted tools) - this new era of blogging will push the envelope further and move persnal publishing further down the pyramid.

Suggestion: don’t call them standards. Call them protocols.
Standards you use because you have to. Protocols implies usage on the basis of agreement.
IMHO as well, the key benefit is the linkage of resources and people. It supports aggregation through a trusted network of friends rather than at random from the entire blogosphere.
Given the ongoing splog crisis, the time is very ripe for such an initiative.
Get just as much working as needed to get this off the ground, and launch. Build some quick and dirty tools to allow people to aggregate without relying on the now-crippled services like Technorati and Pubsub.
Speed is the key word now.

[...] So if I was pitching an article to John Markoff - I’d tell him that Google Base represents a new era of blogging, a new level of personal publishing - just like podcasting, vlogging and mohblogging also push teh envelope. [...]
