And we keep on growing

So another story I’ve spent some time pondering on - before I blogged it - is the news that Multiply has passed 1 million emebers. This means they join the other 1 Mega-people SNS including:

- Friendster
- MySpace
- Cyworld
- h5
- LiveJounral
- Facebook
= Orkut
- Tickle
- Y! 360?????

It’s become increasingly evident that the secret weapon to achieving these numbers is ‘international’. We ain’t talking only ‘mericanos in these networks people!

The Web 2.0 has taken on a decidely international flavor to it. On close examination of Multiply’s messages you quickly see Spanish, Portugese, German and Italian.

The only issue is - I guess - is how this effects advertising and revenues. In both directions.

Can certain promotions and advertising work internationally that would never gain traction just in the US market? Or vice versa - aren’t a lot of these ads only INTENDED for the US market?

How do the communities evolve between languages? Certainly they’re their own form of segmented constituency.

This whole notion of distributed decentralized networks will be the foundation of SNSs for tomorrow. Systems that take advantage of this - and define it (like the GoingOn Network) will be in a great position for tomorrow.
