25th Anniversary of Negativland

One of our artists - Dan Lynch - is a member of Negativland -an art collective originally founded in 1979.

Dan is the visual guy and since this is the first Negativland art show - it’s a big deal for Dan.

It’s time to come and support the old hippies, the hipsters who were hip before hip and hopping. The creative ‘cultural jammers’ who will present…..

Viewers will find appropriations of Disney ventures – such as a reconfigured Lincoln from the Hall of Presidents, and a video remix of the Little Mermaid, merged with the angry telephone recording of a Disney studio executive. Anecdotes about the media and entertainment industries are expressed in such work as the discovery of “Howland Island,” and ideas of approaching stores such as Petco as an art supplies depot. Other work includes a set of limited edition prints from Negativland’s 2002 “Death Sentences” project.

I remember Negativland back in my ‘no wave’ days - back when I was producing at ‘Noise New York’. Sonic Youth, Eno, Talking Heads, great Thai Food.

I still miss “3 Teens Kill Four”.

Anyway if you’re in NYC next week - stop by the show. There’s even a Wikipedia entry.
