The Identity Hub
2.5 years ago Doc and I were talking about these ideas I had for (what we now call) a DLA. A digital lifestyle aggregator.
“It’s a Hub” - Doc says.
“Yah - I like that” says I.
So now I can tell you that the GoingOn Network - will be an Identity Hub - a friend to all - a way to inter-connect and gateway together all the major digital identity systems - together.
Each system brings with it its own benefits, variables and capabilities. But combined together - they represent a ‘can do’ approach to all sorts of Digital Identity challenges that may arise out of personal publishing, social networking, communications, media or mobile services sceanrios. Quite a mouthful and quite a promise.
It may take some time for us to fully implement it and see the benefits - but links from MyYahoo, will flow through Sxip into a tool that is connected to OpenID and InfoCard at the same time. Liberty Alliance compatibility provides a gateway into enterprise, while LID compatility provides a light-weight solution. FOAF will keep the researchers happy while Identity commons compatiblity will keep the tree huggers happy.
Something for everyone!
By connecting these identity systems together, the GoingON Network can be a one stop destination for all sorts of digital ID application and services.

Marc - I’ve read of you through Dave Winer’s blogs and a few others - but I guess I didn’ realize you were working on this type of project. It all sounds interesting. When will we be able to ‘taste it’?
Look forward to seeing, reading and trying this new system out.

I am truly in awe of the potential uses such system. It also scares me a little—as the whole internet thing does. What’s scary to me is the “forms of life” that’s being created. I recently read David Brin’s “The Transparent Society” within which he describes two opposing traits that appear in disputes over privacy.
A. One group believes that another group is inherently dangerous, and that its potential to do harm is exacerbated by secrecy. Therefore, accountability must be forced upon that group through enhanced flow of information.
B. The other argues that some vital good will be threatened by heightened candor, and hence wants the proposed data flow shut down.
As I am in midst of designing a portal to bring people together to play with philosophical and ethical ideas—which argument do you think your application/system will have the greatest impact on?
