Cyworld
I’ve been tracking Cyworld - ever since I first heard about it last year. They’ve grown to 13M members and make $200k a day from selling digital “items” for one’s “mini-home”.
These digital items are just bits - no interactivity, Tamagouchi digital life or anything.
And Cyworld is also Korea’s largest music downloading service -selling music which can ONLY play on one’s mini-home page. ONLY I said.
90% of all cyber-hip folks in Korea have a Cyworld account and though their numbers have gone down since their peak of mid-last year, they’re still way out ahead and are moving to Chna and Japan.
Why not here - you ask?

Hi Marc, Some friends of mine are setting up a similar plattform in Berlin/Germany called npool (http://www.npool.de). Guess what, I advised them to use OpenLaszlo and now they have a developer in Korea working on the first OpenLaszlo app for the portal. The beta testing will start next week. As soon as the online version is availabe I’ll send you the link.
And hey, I was surprised to see that you have some knowledge of the German language (Achtung! Gesundheit)

I have a question- I am korean and and I’ve been trying to sign up for Cyworld, but it keeps asking for this registration number. I live in the United States, so I don’t have one. Is there anything else i can do to prove my identity so I can get an account?

To stella:
you have to prove your identification in some way; contact the admins first and tell them you dont have a korean SS#. they’ll probably ask for a copy of your passport or something similar.

to create a cyworld account you must make ‘회원가입’—- foreigner’s application…
then enter all the information, and you will be able to get it.
note: you better have a korean email—hotmail(although i couldnt get my hotmail to work with it) yahoo.co.kr, or any of the major korean companies (naver, korea, hanmail, etc)

From what I know, foreigners can make a cyworld account (I’ve seen some minihompys managed by Americans), but I’m not sure how.

All my friends have cyworld and i want one so bad.
They all keep on showing off their cyworld’s and they’re korean and i’m not korean but obviously i can’t get a korean on there’s that ID thing you have to have if you’re from korea. Someone please make me believe that US cyworld is worth the wait.
I suspect that US Cyworld may not be compatible with MAC. I own a powerbook G4. I do not know Korean and did not have the SS no to register. I’ve got the China Cyworld but the log box for diary is greyed off so that I can’t type in it. Then, I can start on comments for pictures but to upload the pictures, you need to download a prg that is in .exe. So, even if US cyworld is out of beta, mac users may still be unable to use it. What should I do?

It would be nice to login to all my cyworld accounts with just one account.
When viewing/registering with Cyworld, be sure to allow the ActiveX to install the modules. I guess this means you have to be using IE. For those of you that don’t have a Korean SS# click 회원가입 to apply for a foreigner account. Supply all necessary information and make sure you have a korean email address such as nate, yahoo.kr, hanmail or hotmail. You must scan/provide a legal photo ID to cycop. Check your junk email box for the next 2 weeks to receive your login. If you are a windows user, you can switch your windows to view Korean words in Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced Tab > and select Korean. (You’ll need the Windows install CD) Be sure to set IE to pick up on Korean encoding as well.
Dotori are the money tokens you buy in exchange for music, skins, avatars, and other objects to decorate your room. You could buy Dotori with all major credit cards. (Make sure you download and install all ActiveX modules) Don’t forget to buy gifts for your friends on your 1chon list. This will increase your gift/generosity scale on the top right hand corner of your cypage.
1chon are the first degree friends you allow in your contact list. Friends that are on your 1chon list have greater permissions than those not on your 1chon list. For example, 1chon friends could view certain images that may be hidden to the public. You can also configure your cypage so that only 1chon friends could send you tags, post entries, or post images.
NATE Messenger is an instant messaging program just like MSN Messenger, but integrates fully with Cyworld. It will tell you when your 1chon friend has logged in to Cyworld, sent you a message or a file through Cyworld.

I don’t think the Korean and US cyworlds will be compatible with each other. The China/Japan/etc ones are certainly seperate identities, so I don’t see why they would make this any different. Which SUCKS for me because while I would love to have my US friends as my cyworld friends, they can’t/won’t join the Korean version, and I’ve spent wayyyyy too much effort and money on my Korean cyworld to start from scratch on the US one.

It’s about to be released at the end of August in the states.
I think the target market for here is definitely the younger kids.
Although, I wonder how their allowances will stack up to the money spent by 20 somethings.

Well, this is just a copy of aeroworld (aeropostale.com) and cokemusic (cokemusic.com) where individuals own a room where they customize with virtual things to put in their rooms. I find it quite odd how people would buy those things when in the US it’s just free.
If this does get popular in the USA, then it’s just sad. Nuff said.
I just happened across this so by all means flame me if you want, since I won’t be coming back anytime soon. Cheers.

i signed up for the korean cyworld a week and 1 day ago, but eveyritme i log on, it still tells me that they are checking and making my page. but it said “congratulations, you now have a cyworld” and it told me to wait a week and i have but still no cyworld~
was it the id? i gave them a picture of my school id because i am living in united states right now. can someone help me? that, or, can i add friends who have a korean cyworld, when i sign up for the american one?

FREE CODE = DEATH to CyWorld in USA
Fortunately - users in the US have many options, and CyWorlds - take-it-or-leave-it from their collection of graphics and mini items is not likely to appeal to many myspace users.
MySpace may be terrible tecnnically - and not appeal to the geek “technorati” in elegance - but it is King with users - and it’s easy to see why:
FREEDOM
The fundamental problem is diversity with the CyWorld Approach - MySpace has created a huge ecosystem of companies like http://www.skem9.com http://www.blemeshack.com http://www.glitter-graphics.com http://www.dolliecrave.com http://www.myonda.com http://www.createblog.com
the list and diveristy of sites serving different interests - with different layouts, graphics, video, music etc. to customize your profile - or ANY OTHER profile on another social network is astounding. There are litterally millions upon millions of items from thousands of sites. CyWorld only offers their items - yes for cute acorns, but C’mon?? Who would pay? All the sites offer Free Code - that you can put on any blog, website, profile, wherever…and they are not going away.
http://www.blemeshack.com has even launched a meta search engine to search all the other sites to find these free items and the free code…
You Tube is another Major market force - in distributing their video codes free - they have grown to be the market leader - and the dozens of video offerings that have followed - have all had to offer their video codes for distrbution - to MySpace profiles, blogs, and anywhere else…
Other social networks will grow - and in time - one may top myspace - but it will be based on leveraging all the FREE decoration and enhancement codes ALREADY out there… not by building a closed walled community - and trying to trick users with cutesy garbage into paying for a poorer choice of items.
Look at Tag World - which has tried to push and push it’s own “widgets” (technically elegant and loved by techies) to enhance your profile - after tons of money spent - it’s numbers still suck. Lost Cherry is a good example of an SN that is embracing all of the MySpace content sites - and enhancing some messaging features - and growing like a rocket. They have another revenue idea which is getting users to review advertisers offerings more closely - in exchage for points - but they are doing nothing to try to lock users in, and fully support HTML grabbed from any where - and stored in users bleme Shacks.
In the end - the equation is simple:
Free Code + Leveraging Existing Content + Demographic focus => Social Networking success.
