Hunter S. Thompson R.I.P.

All bloggers owe their heritage to the original Gonzo.

There’s a raging controversy on the pho list this morning.

Which is the correct quote?:

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.

There’s also a negative side.”

or was it:

“The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.”

God bless Hunter - he was an inspiration to us all.

It’s almost impossible to convey to those who weren’t at least in their 20s during the late ’60s the literally (and literarily) stunning impact of HST’s journalism. Now, everyone sort of sounds like him — sounds like him, but doesn’t mean like him, as the two quotes above amply illustrate. (The first one is by HST.)

(And by the way, out of respect for the dearly departed, let’s not castrate the word “gonzo” by turning it into a noun, eh?)

    R.I.P. indeed, Hunter S. Thompson.
