Wirehog
It’s great to see Wirehog getting press - so I can write about it.
It was shown to me by Sean Parker of Napster and Plaxo fame - but I waas under NDA - but now it’s public.
The way I understand the technology - it enables one to share their personal medi and file collectioon - which resides on their PC or Home LAN - out over the web. It does fancy tricks with NAT and other http spoofing stuff to work - via cable modems and average DSL accounts - without opening up huge holes into your system.
But the kicker is that it’s integrated into thefacebook.com which then enables your friends to share this data.
Wallah! Digital lifestyle aggregation!
This is totally coolio shit. I just hope they open source it and make it available to all.
Here a post from Judith Meskill on Wirehog:
Harvard Crimson writer Zachary Seward says that Wirehog—a file-sharing program from the creators of thefacebook—garnered more
than a thousand downloads almost immediately upon release.A cursory check of
Feedster finds mixed reviews about Wirehog.Peer to Peer meets Social Networking—a natural pairing. File swapping with friends and cohorts—hm, I want to do that on Instant Messenger.
I use IM more than email, phone, or face-to-face communication these days—Adium on my Mac is getting better and better. So, when will I be able to just click on a friend or cohort’s name in my buddy list and access a pull-down menu that offers me, based on my cohort’s permission: a select list of their IM chat-ters; shared files; calendars; reading lists; links; photos; blogs; and last but not least a ‘presence panel’ with info on how to best reach them for f2f or v2v interactions?
