Marc's Voice

building the open web one bit at a time

Have I told you how much I like waking up to Scobelizer replying to me - so I can retort back - especially on the day of a micro-content dinner - for peeps have something to laugh about?

OK - here goes.

I pointed out that Microsoft’s Home Media Center 2.5 - wasn’t V3 yet and such any sane person would never touch it. Afterall when was the last time anything that Microsoft did - worked at a measily V2.5?

Scoble comes back and says:

“Um, did you miss that Greg Reinacker is already shipping NewsGator for the Media Center? Did you miss that Media Center is a full version of Windows XP so that you can run any Windows application on it? Hint: you can do BitTorrent and run iPoddder.”

Hah! Gotcha! I knew that! But I also knew that these RSS feeds come in as ??? what? text? Reading text on a TV set - I don’t think so!

This is the falacy of Home media Center. Peeps don’t want a PC on their TV. They want TiVO. They want interfaces designed for the TV.

This whole Home Media Center scam just reaks of Microsoft Koolaid.

Can I be more specific?

How ’bout calling up your good buddy Adam Curry and get him to a) get Podcasting to work on a PC - where all the people are, b) get podcasting to support the many HJome Media Center APIs (I don’t think so!) and c) get Podcasting to have meta-data attached - so that when the Home Media Center reader sucks it in, it’ll sort it by - porno, politics, purity or popularity.

Oh yah and while you’re at it - why not get Microsoft to open up the Home Media Center so we can move those recorded shows around - without encryption and limitations?

THAT’s what would get me to use it.

I missed Robert - and a bunch of other peeps up in Tahoe last week - but he found time to create an opposing get together - for hoidy toidy Search Champs - right during Web 2.0.

Yah gotta love that exclusive insider’s club mentality.

But obviously I’m not important enough for them as a) I wasn’t invited (maybe it’s because Dave Winer was), b) I haven’t been invited into Wallop yet and c) I STILL haven’t received a personal phone call from Gates or Ballmer inquirying as to “what the hell is digital lifestyle aggregation?”

I guess they’ll wait till it’s a multi-billion dollar thingie before they pay atention. With any luck - it’ll have sneaked into Longhorn anyway - but only 80% done.

  1. Actually you can move files around pretty unfettered with the Microsoft Media Center PC which is probably one of the reasons why the HDTV content providers won’t partner with MSFT to get HDTV on the thing via cable or satellite.

Prior to switching to the HDTV TiVo I routinely used to copy files from my MCE machine over to my laptop and watch the shows on the road, BART, or wherever I and my laptop happened to be. I could, theoretically, share the files pretty easily and anyone could watch them via Windows Media Player.

And I’d disagree on the RSS text thing. With a remote that had a “clip this” button, I think it would be great to scan my feeds when I had a few seconds in the living room. Less about reading, responding and posting and more about filtering via a remote 10 feet away for later consumption on my PC. Scoble monitors more than 800 RSS feeds which I think is pretty amazing as I only monitor 89 (of which yours of course is one) but I’d love to see the feeds in MCE. The problem with RSS in MCE is that Gator CHARGES for it. Huh? I thought news was supposed to be free. I think Microsoft should partner with Bloglines and create a free service via MCE.

The only things TiVo has at present, in my opinion, over MCE at the moment is HDTV, a substantially more stable platform and thus a higher WAF.

If anyone is locking content from being shared it’s TiVo. They disabled the home media option and all connectivity on their new HDTV unit. The studios are paranoid about The Sopranos getting out on high def on the internet and thus selling less DVDs. It is easy to get content off the MCE machine and virtually impossible to get it off the HDTV TiVo machine. Even the non-HDTV TiVo machines require some serious hacking to get the content off vs. just copying the file over on a network in MCE that can then be played on any WMP 10 player in the world.

Sorry I couldn’t make your dinner tonight at my favorite restaurant Henry’s Hunan. It was my son’s birthday. I’m looking forward to reading about how it went.

I do think it would be pretty cool to have an add on in MCE for our media where you could scan media via remote on your MCE machine and save stuff to your hard drive for later consumption as well. You could surf the ourmedia site with the MCE remote and push a button that then automatically saves to “my music” or “my pictures” or “my video”, etc.

    Best,

    Tom
