Video Communicating

I know the term video blogging is taking off, but i hate to say it - but video is MUCH BIGGER than just blogging.

By far - the most UNDER UTILIZED aspect of video - up until now - is it’s power in communicating, teaching and helping people figure out - how teh hell to figure something out.

We’re the TV generation and there’s no reason to read anymore. Just watch a clip on teh subject.

All knowledge will be described this way. The entire Wikipedia becomes a Discovery Channel database.

So here are some posts from Jay Dedman that got me off into this rant….

Call-in Show format - emotions and knowledge dispersed…..

Here’s an excerpt from a live call-in show I do every week.
It’s an amazing experience to be able to let people call in and discuss their feelings.
When you let the people talk to each other, magic can happen…especially now in these very political times in the US.

Audio is a little low on the tape.
This is also my first video in MPEG4.
Let me know if you have problems.

Description of things that could never be out into words

Okay, this is a long one: 4 minutes.
Im trying to see how far you can push this format.
How long can I get someone to watch a little screen on their computer

I like video because I can show the things I could never out into words.
Im also really learning a lot from the people in the group.
How could you do this alone?

If you care about technical stuff….this file is almost 10MB.
Most videos are about 2-4MB.
I want to see how fast it loads for people.

also, i had problems getting it on the server….
I use Ecto to upload my video, make a thumbnail, hot link words, etc…It’s awesome.
However, trying to upload a 10mb file made Ecto timeout because the file takes so long to upload….
Adriaan, who created Ecto, said its a bug in this version.
I ended up using Typepad to upload which doesnt let me make a thumbnail easily.
Let me know how it works for you.
it helps.

I’m not so sure about those first thoughts. I find myself having difficulty understanding complex relationships when they are talked about. They sound easy enough. But sometimes I just need to see it worked through, ie I need it in front of me. And that real-time pause-think-continue setting just brings up so many usability issues that, ahem, paper often seems the better option.

I agree that video is bigger than videoblogging…and hopefully one day soon, we SHOW each other what’s going on and how its happening.
    yes yes yes

but in the menatiome, video blogging is a great format.
    its short.
    its updated daily.
and it is supported by the current technology.

    what you are discussing needs:
    1. unlimited storage and bandwidth (open-media?)
    2. filesharing of DVD quality video
    (bit torrent?)
    3. making playlists
    (webjay that can handle QT?)
    4. getting the video onto the TV
    (freevo?)

This will allow for us to make vidoes and share them with each other across the world to watch collectively on our TV’s at home.
but this is just the sharing/presentation vision.

much work needs to be done on the production tools.
like an all-in-one tool that edits, compresses and posts video.
right now, it takes too many applications to get video on the web.
also, we need to figure out codec issues.
    wmv vs QY vs real

i really like the Open-Media.org idea.
    its a big step.
Im working on getting the community of people to actually start speaking in the language of video.
